Sashini, a transgender woman in Colombo, has formally petitioned the National Human Rights Commission to urge the government to recognize her as female by issuing her official documents that reflect her livedgender. Jeewani, a year-old transgender woman, said a police officer in Colombo had raped her when she was Neither Jeewani nor Abeeth reported the crimes, afraid the police would abuse them further. Their legal vulnerability makes them easy targets for horrendous police abuse. A long & hard battle of a Sri Lankan activist for gay rights
Equal Ground works very hard to provide for the needs of the community each year giving the LGBTIQ community of Sri Lanka the space to stand up tall and be proud of who and what they are. PRIDE in Sri Lanka is currently on a small scale and whilst we hope to one day march the streets demanding our rights, the current political climate4 coupled with the oppressive laws against LGBTIQ persons, impedes a peaceful march. Each year, a diverse range of events are held to encourage the Queer community to come out and be proud.
DAST has proposed to assist the men in receiving formal massage therapy certificates, in order to increase their likelihood of receiving more money for their massage services. During my visit, they also discussed opening an English language class to assist the masseurs in providing services to higher paying clients. I also met with a few masseurs who let me know they were from rural areas, and that their income from massage work assists with their studies, and supports family back home.
